  • At the edge of a winter squall spilling over the Spring Mountains and into the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area west of Las Vegas, a rainbow spreads across red sandstone hills as it bridges the desert valley with a cloud-studded blue sky. This horizontal image captures the tension and vibrant color of this dramatic weather event.

  • Vegetation is sparse at the top of Sky City's arid mesa. Plants need water, and, historically, water for a family's use was hand-carried up the cliff. Agriculture was only developed in the valley below. This cottonwood tree, its winter-barren branches awaiting spring's arrival, has been nurtured for decades to provide beauty and shade for its human brothers and sisters.

  • Standing at the base of Desert View Watchtower's western side, between the tower and the small ruin whose wall frames the image's left side, one sees the Colorado River gorge emerge just left of the near Cardenas Butte in front of you. The deep cut that is Bright Angel Canyon runs right from the Colorado River's Granite Gorge toward the middle of the image, behind some of Grand Canyon's most well-known geologic features: Sumner Butte, Zoroaster Temple, and Brahma Temple. The widest flat mesa of the rightward near horizon, with distant horizon behind it, is Wotan's Throne, and in the red lands between this landmark and Cardenas Butte just off the South Rim lie Sheba, Solomon, and Vishnu Temples and Rama and Krishna Shrines.

  • From the artist's "American Bittersweet" series, this surface design exploits the bittersweet vine's curling, twisting branch and twig structure to create an ornate filigree matrix studded with clusters of autumn berries. In nature, these red, orange, and yellow berries contrast starkly with the vine's gray-black bark; in this image, color editing produced turquoise and blue hues that transform berries into semi-precious stone beads and gild the vine's wiry tendrils with gold...as if Mother Nature were a fine jeweler ornamenting the earthly wilderness with her arts and crafts. Image aspect ratio = 2 x 3 (12" x 18" @ 300 dpi)

  • A still pond at Delaware's Bombay Hook wildlife refuge provides a perfect mirror for the blazing late-autumn colors still clinging to the shoreline trees. Red, orange, and yellow leaves pop against a cloudy white sky and its reflection in the glassy water. This image has been digitally edited for impressionistic effect.

  • Deciduous bittersweet vines lose their leaves in late autumn to reveal small, vividly colored berries in yellow, orange and red. This mosaic originated as a rectangular selection from a digital photograph of bittersweet growing alongside the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal (USA); the segment was chosen for its textural interest in combining berry clusters with tangled vines. Simple horizontal and vertical mirroring of this digital "tile" produced this mosaic's elaborate pattern.

  • Vertical portrait of an Australian black swan (Cygnus atratus) provides close-up viewing of the bird's red eyes and beak and black feathers.

  • This design's intricate green details come from the dark spots on leaves of the tropical Calathea lancifolia plant; red accents in the pattern correlate with the coloring of youngest leaves in the artist's original plant-specimen photograph. The triangular digital "tile" used to assemble this mosaic was cut from another digital "wallpaper" in the artist's "Lancifolia" series, entitled "Lancifolia Cascade. The vertically oriented panel displays clusters of four octagons surrounding central medallions. The image aspect ratio of 4 x 9 (16" x 36" @ 300 dpi) allows the overall symmetry of mirroring the top and bottom halves of the design.

  • Built in 1930, the Bacardi building's art deco maginificence still rises above historic Old Havana, an architectural treasure. The famous "black bat on red globe" that is the Bacardi logo adorns the building's cupola. This view of the Bacardi building from an upper floor of the Hotel Sevilla looks east over the city, the bay, and East Havana beyond.
